Project NAPSACC
In 2007, the Early Care & Learning Council was awarded a five-year New York State Department of
Health grant to support an obesity prevention initiative based in child care settings. The Nutrition and
Physical Activity Self Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC) is an intervention designed for child care
centers to improve their nutrition and physical activity environments, policies and practices through
self-assessment, action planning, staff training and targeted technical assistance.
In years one and two at least 20 CCR&R staff serving 12 counties implemented the NAP SACC
intervention to 72 child care centers. It is anticipated that year three will expand the project to nine
new counties around the state and be offered to 50 additional child care centers.
This project is already noting improvements being made in child care centers.
At the end of year 1, center directors were asked:
What measurable and observable changes have occurred at you center as a result of your
participation in NAP SACC?
Answers included the following:
Nutrition Improvements
- “High fat meats and processed foods have been completely eliminated.”
- “Staff was more aware of nutritional importance and portion control.”
- “We have tried and succeeded to cut back on juice with snacks.”
- “My staff is eating better and in turn the children are eating and snacking better.”
- “Center is now serving 1% milk to all children older than 1 year.”
Physical Activity Improvements
- “Staff are exercising more and engaging in aerobic exercises in the classroom more regularly.”
- “The workers are playing with the children more.”
- “Added structured physical activity for the children and added staff training in nutrition and physical activity.”
- “Wrote nutrition and physical activity policy for center.”
